Confirming a recent rumor that did the rounds, Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced that a new Harry Potter series is currently being developed for the HBO Max streaming service.

As previously reported, the show will fully reboot the popular movies with an entirely new cast, and the plan is to re-adapt the source novels with each season dedicated to one of the seven books.

The news received a somewhat mixed response, and not just because so many fans feel that the films adapted the story perfectly well. The fact that controversial author J.K. Rowling is involved has come in for a lot of backlash.

In a post-show Q&A, HBO Chairman Casey Bloys was asked if Rowling's involvement led to any concerns that they could have trouble "attracting talent" to the project. Bloys shrugged off the question somewhat, stating that the Rowling discourse as a "very online conversation" that's "obviously very nuanced and complicated."

"Our priority is what's on screen, and obviously the Harry Potter story is incredibly formative and positive and about love and self-acceptance," he added.

In other words, there's no show without Rowling, and they want to make lots of money, so she's on board whether fans like it or not.
