DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES Concept Art Reveals Paul Rudd And Charlize Theron Were Eyed As Leads

New concept art from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves points to a very different tone for the movie and seems to confirm early plans to cast Paul Rudd, Charlize Theron, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a blast, but for some longtime fans of the iconic board game, the movie we got wasn't exactly how they pictured it being adapted to live-action.

Ultimately, the tongue-in-cheek action movie prioritised laughs over the sort of epic fantasy approach to the material we could have seen in its place (with a tone akin to The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, for example). Now, some early concept art for Honor Among Thieves shared by Christian Cordella has pointed to the project once having a slightly darker tone...and a much different cast.

As you can see below, it appears Paul Rudd was originally considered for Chris Pine's Edgin, but given the Ant-Man star's penchant for comedy, we'd guess the approach to the story at this time wasn't that different despite how the costumes look.

Charlize Theron, meanwhile, was considered for Michelle Rodriguez's Holga, while Benedict Cumberbatch's likeness was used for a villain called Drizzt (who, according to Cordella, was later replaced with Xnek).

There's nothing to say these actors were ever approached for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and they may well have just been who the filmmakers working on the movie originally envisioned for these roles. That happens a lot with big budget projects like this one, though it's hard not to think about what might have been.

In Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people in this hilarious and action-packed adventure.

Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the movie stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. With its theatrical run at an end, the movie is now available for fans to watch at home on Premium Video-On-Demand and to purchase on Digital.

Such a great movie. I wouldn't mind a more serious tone and of course Charlize Theron is always great
