It seems that Russell Crowe (62) and WWE superstar Drew McIntyre (41) hit it off so well while filming Henry Cavill's remake of Highlander that they decided to team again on the upcoming action fantasy pic, The Last Druid.
According to Deadline Hollywood, the film's plot synopsis reads, "the movie will tell the story of a Roman Emperor who discovers a secluded Druid stronghold in the mountains of Caledonia. A peaceful Celtic elder (Crowe) must take up arms to protect his family and people from annihilation. "
In addition to Crowe and McIntyre, The Last Druid also stars Stacy Clausen (Leviticus), Pablo Derqui (Julia’s Eyes), Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), and Russell's son, Tennyson Crowe.
Additional cast members also include Andreas Pietschmann (Dark) and Daniel Zovatto (Woman of the Hour).
William Eubank is directing The Last Druid, working from a screenplay he penned alongside Carlyle Eubank and Phil Gawthorne.
Filming on the historical fantasy drama kicked off in May and recently wrapped earlier this week. McIntyre recently shared a training pic of himself and Crowe on what clearly appears to be an arms training session.
Crowe also shared the pic on his Instagram, adding the caption, "In the gym with Drew McIntyre. Good lad. Salt of the earth. Just finishing up the shoot on The Last Druid. We have been shooting in Spain since May. It has been two years now since playing Hermann Goering in Nuremberg. The long sweaty days in the beautiful Spanish sunshine have definitely been a great motivator. As I always say, it’s one layer of tissue paper at a time. Consistency is your friend."
Crowe and McIntyre went straight from filming Cavill's Highlander to shooting The Last Druid.
Highlander was originally slated to wrap much earlier in the year, but the production suffered a setback after Henry Cavill injured his ankle. The January shoot didn't wrap until June.
In Highlander, Crowe is portraying Ramirez, a role previously portrayed by Sean Connery in the original Highlander film. McIntyre is playing Cavill's brother in the pic, Angus MacLeod.
We don't have an exact calendar date on the calendar just yet, but Amazon MGM Studios is aiming to bring Henry Cavill's Highlander reboot to theaters in late 2027 under the revived United Artists banner.
