The highly anticipated live-action Elden Ring movie is continuing to build excitement, and the latest news update is that Kit Connor will be the film's lead.
Deadline Hollywood reports that the Heartstopper and The Wild Robot star will reunite with director Alex Garland, having previously collaborated on Garland's recent action-thriller, Warfare.
Garland is not only directing but also penning the script for this monumental video game adaptation. Adding further gravitas to the project, George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind A Song of Ice and Fire and the architect of Elden Ring's foundational lore, is confirmed as a producer. Martin's intricate world-building laid the historical, mythical, and genealogical groundwork for the Lands Between.
FromSoftware and Bandai Namco’s action-adventure RPG Elden Ring has left an indelible mark on the gaming world and beyond, with over 30 million copies sold globally. Far more than just a commercial success, it represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of action RPGs. The game’s relentless, high-stakes combat, vast and immersive open-world, and rich character-building mechanics have resonated with players around the world—cementing its place as a cultural phenomenon and a natural fit for a big-screen adaptation.
Developed by FromSoftware under the visionary direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, Elden Ring's haunting, mythic narrative unfolds in the Lands Between. This realm was once blessed by the Elden Ring and the Erdtree, symbols of the Greater Will’s divine order. However, a mysterious cataclysm known as The Shattering fractured the Ring, plunging the world into chaos. Now, demigods—the children of Queen Marika—clash over the scattered Great Runes, as exiled Tarnished are called back to mend the Ring and claim the mantle of Elden Lord.
What truly sets Elden Ring apart from its "Souls-like" predecessors is its breathtaking open-world structure. Unlike the more linear designs of previous FromSoftware titles, the Lands Between offers unparalleled freedom from the outset. Players can wander in any direction, uncover secrets at their own pace, and forge their own path through a world as mysterious as it is perilous.
With its intricate mythology, iconic landscapes, and a deeply personal journey of power, loss, and destiny, Elden Ring is a sprawling epic that seems tailor-made for the silver screen.
Even Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki acknowledged the potential for adaptation back in 2024: "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example, but I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium." He added, "So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but we have interest, for sure."
With Alex Garland at the helm and a stellar cast forming, it seems Miyazaki's desire for a "very strong partner" has been realized.
As production continues, we await more casting news and the official confirmation of a release date. What character do you hope Kit Connor is playing in the Lands Between?
