LORD OF THE RINGS Star Dominic Monaghan On Why He Thinks Co-Stars Have Avoided Superhero Movies (Exclusive)

The Lord of the Rings movies boasted an insanely talented group of actors, though most have shied away from commercial blockbusters and, more specifically, superhero movies in the years since.

Some, like Andy Serkis and Dominic Monaghan have embraced genre fare, while others, such as Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom, have mostly avoided them (Hugo Weaving, meanwhile, appears to have zero interest in taking another crack at a Marvel project after starring in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger).

It goes without saying that Peter Jackson is a very special filmmaker, while the experience of shooting that adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's series of novels in New Zealand is one we have to imagine will forever be hard to beat. With that in mind, we recently asked Monaghan for his thoughts on whether that explains why we've seen so few of his co-stars head down the superhero route.

"I’m not sure. I think, probably, there are some people who worked on The Lord of the Rings who just don’t have the taste for graphic novel films and those kinds of superhero things," he explains in the video above. "Then, some people have got close and it maybe didn’t work out for them."

Sharing his take on the genre, Monaghan added, "I think there’s an oversaturation of the market at this point. There are some good superhero films and some bad ones, and I think there are probably more bad ones than good so maybe people have some reluctance to get involved with them. We were spoiled with Peter Jackson in that you’ll never do a job as good as that, so it’s tough to have those high standards, but like I said, in your career, you can never say no to anything."

"I’m sure at some point in the future, I’ll do something that’s a little more Marvel-orientated."

So, Monaghan clearly hasn't closed the door on exploring that world, even if it appears some of his old pals from Middle-earth have! His comments about there being more bad than good superhero movies may upset some, but when you look at the past few years, he's not entirely wrong.
