2018's brilliantly bizarre Mandy marked Panos Cosmatos as a filmmaker to keep a very close eye on, and we finally have an update on his next project.

THR reports that Cosmatos is set to team with A24 for a new sci-fi fantasy film titled Nekrokosm. Maegan Houang (Counterpart) is working on the script, and while specific plot details are still under wraps, the story is described as a “phantasmagorical fantasy nightmare set deep within a strange galaxy where two lovers are torn apart as they try to survive a malevolent invasion."

Houang was part of the writing team for Starz's Counterpart. She also worked on FX’s upcoming miniseries, Shogun, and co-wrote Justin Chon’s forthcoming feature Jamojaya.

This sounds right up both of their alleys, and a collaboration with the envelope-pushing production company behind the likes of X, The Green Knight, and Everything Everywhere All at Once is set to put Nekrokosm on a lot of sci-fi fans' radars.

If you're unfamiliar with Cosmatos' work, be sure to give Mandy a watch. It's a surreal, trippy horror flick starring Nicolas Cage as a lumberjack who seeks vengeance on a gang of demonic bikers. Still here?
