Despite the ongoing Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike, A24's Death of a Unicorn will still be able to film with no restrictions.
That's because the project has received a special exemption from SAG which allows "truly independent productions" to continue filming with SAG actors; on a case-by-case basis.
Death of a Unicorn will star Paul Rudd (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) and Jenna Ortega (Scream, Wednesday) as a father-daughter combo who hit a unicorn with their car while on the way home. They strap it to their hood and bring it to a wilderness retreat of a mega-wealthy pharmaceutical CEO where they discover that even dead, it has mystical, restorative powers.
Alex Scarfman (Resurrection) is set to write and direct, with filming slated to begin in a few weeks.
With the SAG-AFTRA strike expected to last for quite some time, expect to see more A-list Hollywood talent signing up for indie projects to keep busy while negotiations continue with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
A24 is known for producing some of the best films of recent years including Ex Machina, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Midsommar and Pearl so we're guessing that Death of a Unicorn might be a project to keep an eye on- especially come awards season.
