Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves definitely didn't set the box office on fire when it was released on March 31, 2023, but it's found a second life on home video and streaming.
The general consensus is that the fantasy film is far better than the $209 million it earned worldwide from an estimated production budget of $150 million.
Critics were particularly enthusiastic about Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, with the film earning a 91% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid 72 Metascore on Metacritic. The overarching praise for the movie centered on its great balance between high fantasy and comedic charm, mixed with its energetic ensemble and creative magic mechanics.
As such, there's been persistent clamoring and wishful hopes for a possible sequel, even if the project turned into a straight-to-streaming venture for Paramount+.
In the latest update, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein say Hasbro is determined to get the sequel made, even if it was to move on from Paramount.
Goldenstein told The Playlist, "I think Hasbro is a big believer in it, and if they can figure out a studio partner to make it work, they’ll want to proceed. As are our producers."
Daley chimed in, "I mean, look, it’s something that is near and dear to our hearts in that we loved making the first one. We fell in love with the characters, and there’s so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn’t filled with exposition or introduction to this family that we’ve already become accustomed to. So you can kind of launch right into the story, which is really nice.”
He also commented on the financial challenges, stating, "Yes, there are practical realities with the finance contingent, and who knows if it ever gets made, but we were proud of the sequel script and hope that at some point it does find a path."
