Though they only had relatively minor roles in the original animated movie, Ariel's six older sisters will feature in Disney's upcoming live-action reimagining of The Little Mermaid, and this new promo image gives us our best look yet at each of the characters.
In the animated version, Ariel's sisters were named Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista and Andrina, and all seven daughters of King Triton represented the seven seas. However, based on info from one of the remake's tie-in books, their names have been changed to Mala, Karina, India, Caspia, Perla, and Tameka.
The ladies could be glimpsed in the most recent trailer and a couple of TV spots (as well as merchandise art), but you can get a first proper look at the actresses playing the movie's other main mermaids below.
Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy star alongside Javier Bardem as King Triton, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
The Little Mermaid will feature music from the animated classic as well as four new songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who previously worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns, will also compose original music for Mermaid along with Alan Menken.
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
The movie is set to swim into theaters on May 26, 2023.
