THE LITTLE MERMAID Stills Showcase Melissa McCarthy's Transformation Into Ursula And Halle Bailey As Ariel

Disney has released a new batch of stills from The Little Mermaid, putting the spotlight on Melissa McCarthy's Ursula, Halle Bailey as Ariel, and a number of key moments from the upcoming live-action movie.

During this weekend's Oscar ceremony (we're still not over Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Angela Bassett being snubbed either), Disney released a new trailer for The Little Mermaid.

Despite some of the initial controversy that surrounded the movie, this looks like a pitch-perfect adaptation and one that promises to sit alongside the likes of Aladdin and The Jungle Book as one of the studio's best live-action movies. May can't get here soon enough, that's for sure, and we now have some new stills to tide you over (via Toonado.com).

Those showcase some of The Little Mermaid's stunning imagery, along with closer looks at Ariel, Prince Eric, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

The latter looks set to steal the show here, and while she has big shoes (tentacles?) to fill after Pat Carroll's memorable performance, we have a feeling her performance will be something special. The same could be said for Halle Bailey, though, an actress who promises to put herself on the map with this role.

In the movie, the youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart.

She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The Little Mermaid stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, with Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

Helmed by visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall, the movie opens exclusively in theaters on May 26, 2023.
