The fantasy epic grossed $33M from international territories and another $17.3M across the 4-day Labor Day holiday weekend for a cumulative total of $50.3M
Tom Holland's fourth Spider-Man film grossed $26.1M from overseas theaters and another $23.5 million from North American theaters for a worldwide gross of $49.6M.
Christopher Nolan's fantasy pic has had such strong staying power that IMAX keeps extending the film's IMAX 70mm, which was originally scheduled to end in early August. Now, fans have until the end of September (unless another extension occurs).
Both films' historic box office dominance will soon face major competition from a highly anticipated slate of autumn blockbusters including Practical Magic 2 (September 11), Resident Evil (September 18), and Clayface (October 23).
As for what's for Nolan, the talented director indicated that he's interested in making a horror movie but that he finds the genre difficult to navigate, personally, as he would want his horror film to have a solid, original narrative core.
One genre Nolan won't be tackling is romantic comedy, as he admitted that he's a bit intimidated by those films during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Nolan explained to Fallon, "When you make a film... you know, if I show a film to people and maybe they don't respond to bits of it, I'm like, 'Ah, they don't get it. Whatever.' There's no hiding behind that when you do comedy. So, I would be terrified of doing anything like that."
