Earlier this year, we learned that The Twilight Saga is being rebooted for television. While the project is in the very early stages of development (it's unclear whether it will retell Stephenie Meyer's best-selling book series or be some sort of spin-off), excitement among fans is through the roof.
Sinead Daly (The Walking Dead: World Beyond) is attached to write the script, but could filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke get involved with the project? She set the tone for the franchise with the 2008 movie and was sorely missed from the sequels, so it's something many would love to see happen.
We recently caught up with Catherine to discuss her new movie, Prisoner's Daughter, ahead of its release in theaters this Friday. You can watch the full interview below, but it was during the course of our conversation that the director made it clear she's definitely open to revisiting Twilight.
"Well, it was amazing to be part of that and see how many lives it touched. People have found friends, and global friendships online, and it’s saved people’s lives. I’ve had people tell me amazing stories," Hardwicke recalls. "I loved the story. If it ever were to happen, it could be fun to revisit it."
"We already had a beautiful experience with it, so I appreciate what I had and what it meant to everybody. It’s fun because it’s the 15th anniversary this year and you have a whole new round of people on TikTok falling in love with it and making new crazy parodies [Laughs]. It’s so fun. I love that it keeps living on."
When we pointed out that it must be somewhat surreal to see how far lead stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have come, the filmmaker had nothing but good things to say about the impact they've both had on Hollywood, particularly when it comes to Indie projects.
"One thing that’s so great about Twilight is it gave them the clout and power to be able to greenlight a lot of beautiful, smaller, unique Indie films that might have never been made," she says. "They really took their situation and helped Sundance Indie film world."
"I think I knew that in a way because they were both very Indie kids with their music and books. It’s great they’re able to use that for their unique vision...[Robert Pattinson's] Batman, it’s very layered and so interesting."
Only time will tell what form that Twilight reboot takes, but getting Hardwicke back behind the camera for an episode or two would generate a lot of goodwill among fans. As things stand, we don't know for sure it will even happen, though Lionsgate reviving one of its most popular properties seems likely.
Prisoner's Daughter arrives in theaters on June 30.
