It initially appears as if The Little Mermaid had made a smaller-than-expected slash at the box office. However, it would go on to gross a solid $542 million worldwide, a haul which is undeniably impressive in this post-pandemic era.
As one of the better live-action remakes from Disney, it was initially criticised for casting Halle Bailey but the singer and actress proved everyone wrong with her fantastic performance. As for the widely discussed modernisation of outdated lyrics, that proved to be much ado about nothing.
So, when will you be able to watch The Little Mermaid on Disney+? Well, it's been announced (via Toonado.com) that this live-action reimagining of Disney's Oscar-winning animated musical classic The Little Mermaid will premiere on the streamer starting September 6!
Disney+ subscribers will be able to access special bonus content, including Oscar winner Javier Bardem as King Triton performing the song "Impossible Child" with music by multiple Academy Award winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast) and lyrics by three-time Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton); "Passing the Dinglehopper," and "Under the Sea - Song Breakdown."
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric.
While mermaids are forbidden from interacting with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life - and her father’s crown - in jeopardy.
The Little Mermaid stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, with Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
