The tales of Dunk and Egg may not be finished. Although HBO's A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will adapt the three currently existing Dunk and Egg novellas, series showrunner Ira Parker has revealed that George R.R. Martin is working on a fourth book.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Parker was asked about the prospect of taking a multiyear breaker after adapting the three existing Dunk and Egg novellas to tell new canonical stories from the characters’ lives. That's when Parker dropped the exciting news.
"But yeah, I’d love to expand it from three seasons to maybe four or five. Book four, which George is working on, takes place in a very cool location," Parker revealed. "And five is the last story point of Egg as a boy. So it’s a very natural ending place for us to take a break and come back when Dexter is older. So then we can do Egg the Prince, do some politics, do some fun stuff in Summer Hall and King’s Landing, and get a different vibe where they’re not on the road all the time."
Martin currently has several books in various stages of development, the most notable being The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth novel in the main A Song of Ice and Fire series. Although HBO's Game of Thrones adaptation has been long over, fans are still eagerly waiting to see how the major storylines will wrap up from Martin's written word.
Martin has also previously stated that he wants to write more stories about Dunk and Egg.
"[I]t has always been my intent to write a whole series of novellas about Dunk and Egg, chronicling their entire lives," Martin wrote on his blog back in 2014. "At various times in various interviews I may have mentioned seven novellas, or ten, or twelve, but none of that is set in stone. There will be as many novellas as it takes to tell their tale, start to finish."
"The unfinished novella was indeed set in Winterfell, and involved a group of formidable Stark wives, widows, mothers, and grandmothers that I dubbed 'the She-Wolves,' but "The She-Wolves of Winterfell" was never meant to be more than a working title. The final title, when I finish the story, will be something different," he continued. "There's also another Dunk & Egg novella that I've got roughed out in my head, with the working title "The Village Hero." That one takes place in the Riverlands. There's no telling when I will have time to finish either of these, or which one I will write first. I don't expect I will know more until I've delivered THE WINDS OF WINTER."
Fast forward to today, and The Winds of Winter has been in development for about 15 years now, so who really knows if we'll ever get a new story of Dunk and Egg.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which began filming in December of last year. While weather conditions complicated the production timeline, the series is expected to return in early 2027.
