Netflix announced this week that Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, its live-action re-imagining of the beloved animated series, will premiere on June 25, 2026.
The series was renewed for Seasons 2 and 3 back in March 2024, with the epic story of Aang and his friends concluding in that third and final season. But the war against the Fire Nation is far from over.
Picking up after the team's bittersweet victory defending the Northern Water Tribe, Aang and his friends head out in search of the Earth King with hopes of getting him to join their fight against Fire Lord Ozai.
“We’re looking forward to working with all of our actors again and digging into the deeper, more complicated relationships that develop as their journey continues in Season 2,” said executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani. “We are going to show the real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original, and explore some of the stories that the animation didn’t. Mainly, we’re looking forward to seeing our gang all together again.”
“I thought it was really clever of the writers to end Season 1 in that way, because you want to get a sense that the universe of the show is expanding with every season,” Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Fire Lord Ozai told Tudum in February. “And they really did a good job of that with that cliff-hanger and also created a sense of urgency and time.”
Their journey will take them deep into the Earth Kingdom to the mysterious city of Ba Sing Se. In an accompanying behind-the-scenes video, the cast and crew explore the practical sets of Ba Sing Se.
“Once we got the back lot and we realized we could build Ba Sing Se … I probably cried that day. It was so exciting,” said executive producer and writer Christine Boyland. “All of those buildings were real. We would go in there with our monitors. We would go in there and write.”
After a bittersweet victory saving the Northern Water Tribe from the invading Fire Nation, Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) regroup and set off on a mission to convince the elusive Earth King to aid in their battle against fearsome Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim).
Their journey to the impenetrable city of Ba Sing Se, home of the Earth King, is treacherous but also fruitful – Aang discovers Toph (Miyako), an audacious young master of earthbending, and convinces her to help him add earthbending to his powers of airbending and waterbending.
Season 2 will also introduce one of the franchise's most beloved characters: Toph Beifong, the fan-favorite earthbender. The blind earthbending master will be played by Miyako "Miya" Cech in the live-action series.
Briefly touching on the dynamic between Aang and Toph, series star Gordon Cormier teased, “I’m learning, she’s teaching. There’s quite a bit of argumentativeness, if that’s a word.”
Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender will premiere on Netflix on June 25. Filming has already wrapped on Season 3.
