The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot/revival was first announced back in February, and according to a new interview from director Chloé Zhao (Eternals), the pilot has wrapped filming.

It's important to note that at this point, the Buffy continuation has received a pilot commitment from Hulu and has not yet been ordered to series.

Still, this is an exciting development as word should come down soon regarding the show's fate.

While speaking to the LA Times about her new release Hamnet, Zhao revealed the news about the status of the pilot. "I just wrapped the pilot on the new “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series, which is set 25 years later. My company is part of developing it. The fandom is so special to me and I’m excited about how that’s going to go into the world."

Elsewhere, one of the pilot's guest stars, actress Chase Sui Wonders, briefly touched on the show, citing Gellar important role as a Buffy historian/consultant.

"I think Sarah Michelle Gellar is a legend and she’s very involved in the series, which is just, I feel like the dream for everyone involved, because you can consult her,” Chase Sui Wonders told Decider.

Wonders is rumored to be portraying a vampire, possibly the primary antagonist or one of his/her henchmen. Wonders continued, “She’s there the whole time on set, and you can consult her about anything in the Buffy universe, and she’s got it in her mind because she grew up on that set. So I feel like people are in for a real treat.

Wonders and Gellar previously worked together on I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025), with Wonders playing one of the main leads and Gellar reprising the role of Helen Shivers from the 1997 film.

Longtime Buffy fans may recall the series finale, which saw Sunnydale sink into the Hellmouth and dozens of slayers awaken around the world thanks to a spell from Willow (Alyson Hannigan). It marked a huge departure from the show's premise that the Slayer was a single teenage girl, and it will be interesting to see how the revival reconciles these events.

Sisters Nora and Lila Zuckerman (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Poker Face) will serve as co-showrunners with Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals)  directing the pilot and executive producing the show.

Gellar is also listed as an executive producer along with the original executive producer of the show, Gail Berman.

In addition to Gellar as Buffy, the full cast for the show includes Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) as Nova, this generation's current slayer, along with series regulars Faly Rakotohavana (Unprisoned), Ava Jean, Sarah Bock (Severance), Daniel Di Tomasso (Dynasty, The Republic of Sarah) and Jack Cutmore-Scott (Tenet, Oppenheimer).

Additional cast members include Wonders,  Merrin Dungey, Audrey Hsieh, and Audrey Grace Marshall.
