The witches of Coven Academy are getting another term. Disney has renewed the supernatural teen drama for a second season, only a little over three weeks after Season 1 premiered.
Freeform shared the news with fans on social media, promising more magic is on the way.
The Numbers Behind the Renewal
The quick pickup follows strong viewing figures. According to Disney, the first season of Coven Academy racked up 20.3 million global hours in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu. On top of that, the series pulled in more than 30 million views after its first chapter was posted to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
The show was also the number one streaming series among teens aged 12 to 17 over its premiere weekend, and it landed in the top five among all viewers based on views. Nielsen data cited by Disney shows the series was a family affair, too. Half of the teens aged 12 to 17 who watched did so alongside an adult, as did nearly two-thirds of kids aged 6 to 11.
What Coven Academy Is About
The first season follows three teenage witches and their dangerously charming warlock peers at an elite magic boarding school. It is the kind of place where power is currency, secrets are lethal and attraction is a liability.
Caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden romances, the coven has to decide how far it is willing to go to protect its city and its members. That mix of magic school intrigue and teen drama puts the series in familiar territory for fantasy fans, but the early numbers show it has found an audience of its own.
The show also has an unusual format. Season 1 is made up of 21 short chapters. Nine of them premiered on Freeform, and the rest arrived on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. The series was originally meant to be the first young adult series to air on Disney Channel before it moved over to Freeform and streaming, where it sits alongside more mature content.
Federle Already Has Season 2 Ideas
Creator Tim Federle is already thinking about where the story goes next. In an interview with Variety, he hinted that the relationship between mothers and daughters could be a focus.
"I don't want to tell another straight-up mom mystery again, but I think there is something fun to explore in what makes a mother and daughter so dangerous when they're together. And who would be most threatened by that?" Federle said.
The Cast and Creative Team
The series stars:
- Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar
- Malachi Barton as Jake
- Jordan Leftwich as Sasha
- Ora Duplass as Tegan
- Louis Thresher as Ollie
- Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Graves
Devon Sawa also guest stars as Mr. Cole, which is a fun bit of casting for anyone who grew up on his genre work.
Federle previously created High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. He executive produced the first season alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row and Bronwyn North-Reist. The show is produced by Federle's Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids and Family.
Where to Watch
All of Season 1 is streaming now on Disney+ and Hulu, and it is also available on Freeform On Demand. The renewal announcement did not include a Season 2 premiere date, so anyone who has not started the show has plenty of time to catch up.
Magic school stories are having a moment on screen right now. Over at HBO, the upcoming Harry Potter series is set to carry a budget even bigger than many expected, while Coven Academy has shown there is room for smaller, character-driven takes on the genre.
