HBO has confirmed today that House of the Dragon has been renewed for a second season.

The series debuted this past Sunday, August 21, to the largest audience for any new original series in HBO history. The first episode has now been seen by over 20 million viewers across linear, On Demand and HBO Max platforms in the U.S., based on a combination of Nielsen data and first-party data.

Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, the series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, tells the story of House Targaryen.

"We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one," says Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming. "Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV."

"A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two."

Despite the consensus being that House of the Dragon was, in some respects, "more of the same" after Game of Thrones, the critical response has been positive and fans seem to have embraced the spinoff. This renewal looks set to be incredibly important for the franchise's future as at least four live-action projects are in development, along with three animated TV shows.

As for when we'll see season 2 of the show it could be a while. House of the Dragon was shooting for 10 months before a lot of post-production work (which is still ongoing), so a 2024 return seems most likely.

We're only one episode in, but are you excited for more House of the Dragon? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments section.
