There's a lot of excitement for Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, especially as the movies failed to deliver the sort of faithful take on the source material many fans of the books had hoped for.
The streaming service is clearly pleased with how the project is shaping up as author Rick Riordan has confirmed that the writers' room for season 2 is already open. However, that doesn't necessarily mean a second batch of episodes will become a reality.
Taking to his website, RickRiordan.com, he explained that the creative team has "started work on the writers’ room for season two. This does NOT mean the second season has been green-lit yet. It’s too early for that. But we have been approved to start developing scripts, and I think everyone’s expectation is that a second season will happen if all goes as planned."
The author is a co-writer, creative consultant, and executive producer on this small screen adaptation of his work, and he'd go on to confirm that, "We’ve broken down the action of the second Percy Jackson book, The Sea of Monsters, into a series of episodes, and have begun outlining what the first episodes would look like."
"I love imagining the introduction of Tyson, our favourite Cyclops, and it’s so helpful to picture our amazing actors in their on-going roles as I am visualizing the season."
Riordan went on to confirm that a second season will faithfully adapt his second book, promising a larger role for Clarisse LaRue, the incredible Dior Goodjohn, and Luke Castellan/Charlie Bushnell. Oh, and Party Ponies, of course.
"My usual disclaimer: This is all HYPOTHETICAL at this point," he concluded. "We have big plans, but nothing is green-lit (past the writers room) and nothing is set in stone. Fingers crossed, though, the first season does as well as we hope, and leads to an even greater second!"
Shooting on season 1 wrapped last month, meaning Percy Jackson and the Olympians is now in post-production. We're getting a total of eight episodes adapting the events of The Lightning Thief, and continue to hope that a proper first look is on the way.
As of right now, though, Percy Jackson and the Olympians isn't expected to premiere on Disney+ until 2024. With that in mind, a trailer could still be a long way off.
