When The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns for Season 3 on November 11, the Prime Video series will be more in line with the "classic" Middle-earth storytelling that proved so popular in Peter Jackson's movies.
A five-year time jump means we'll pick up with Sauron cementing his power and coming even closer to forging The One Ring. For fans who grew frustrated with the first two seasons or those eager to tune in without having to catch up, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's showrunners promise Season 3 will serve as a soft reboot.
Talking to IGN, co-showrunner Patrick McKay said, "We really love the idea of throwing the viewer in, in a way that is a completely fresh start. J.D. Payne, my co-showrunner and I, we're huge admirers of shows that have done this kind of [time jump] before, like Battlestar Galactica and Halt and Catch Fire. That can be really fun for a viewer."
"Hopefully, this season is a great jumping-on point for fans," he continued. "And it truly starts with people talking about the One Ring."
Unsurprisingly, it sounds like being tasked with shooting the first two seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power back-to-back was a strain, especially when production moved from New Zealand to the UK.
"I think our goal for Season 3 is really to blow the doors off the hinges," McKay said after admitting that getting a little more breathing space to make Season 3 proved beneficial. "We're really proud of Seasons One and Two, but... for us, now, in some ways, we're starting a whole new story. This is turning the page on the show."
Sauron's rise will also open the door to exploring what it means for the Orcs who eventually serve him. The series will introduce Marnouk, an Orc who arrives in Rivendell after defecting from the villain's army.
"He claims to know all kinds of things about Sauron's strategy and reveals to the Elves that Sauron is trying to make the One Ring," McKay teased. "And if he succeeds, he will defeat everyone, including the Orcs, because the One Ring will now make them subservient to him, slaves to him forever, and there'll never be another Orc rebellion like Adar, who died last season, led."
In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, Middle-earth is at war. Five years have passed since the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have marched across the whole of the world, conquering all in their path.
Only a few isolated pockets stand between the Dark Lord and total victory – Khazad-dûm, where the Dwarves are now sealed deep within their mountain halls, and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, which are protected by their Three Rings.
But deep in the land of Mordor, in his newly completed tower of Barad-dûr, the Dark Lord toils day and night, obsessed with harnessing a power that will bring the last of his enemies to their knees: One Ring to rule them all...
The first four episodes of Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on November 11, 2026. Then episodes five and six will be available to stream on November 18, while the final two episodes of the season will be released on November 25.
