The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns to Prime Video later this month with a Season 3 that promises to softly reboot the series. How? By picking up five years after the events of the explosive Season 2 finale.
A fresh start for the show means bringing it more in line with the Middle-earth many fantasy fans will remember from The Lord of the Rings movies. The first two seasons received a tepid response, so the hope is that Season 3 will win them over and even attract new viewers.
It's no secret that Amazon has committed to five seasons, and in an interview with GamesRadar+, co-showrunner Peter McKay confirmed that the plan is for more time jumps as the series continues.
That will allow The Rings of Power to progress through the Second Age before it likely concludes with Season 5, and as McKay put it, "I think from the very beginning, we aspired the show to compress the time that’s in the books, but also to have significant jumps forward in time for characters to age, for kingdoms to rise or fall, and I think you know there will probably be some jumps in the future."
When The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuted in 2022, co-showrunner J.D. Payne explained that Amazon had committed to a "50-hour show" and that he and McKay had planned out a story "with a clear beginning, middle and end." As a result, the duo had already decided what the final shot of the series finale would be.
Asked in a separate interview with ScreenRant whether that's changed, McKay explained:
"I'll answer it two different ways. One way is, so my co-showrunner and I, J.D. Payne, from our first conversations about this world and what we might want to do with the show, that started nine years ago. We had a plan for five seasons. We knew in season three that Sauron would make the One Ring, Celeborn, Galadriel's long lost husband, would return. It would be the War of the Elves and Sauron."
"The show would darken and become more psychological. This was all part of the plan, and it's a plan that's holding up wonderfully. But to answer the other way, you also always want to leave room for discovery. The work that we do on set every single day is looking for authentic moments, and sometimes you have to change the plan at the last moment. But all that said, no, the final shot has not changed."
In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, Middle-earth is at war. Five years have passed since the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have marched across the whole of the world, conquering all in their path.
Only a few isolated pockets stand between the Dark Lord and total victory – Khazad-dûm, where the Dwarves are now sealed deep within their mountain halls, and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, which are protected by their Three Rings.
But deep in the land of Mordor, in his newly completed tower of Barad-dûr, the Dark Lord toils day and night, obsessed with harnessing a power that will bring the last of his enemies to their knees: One Ring to rule them all...
The first four episodes of Season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on November 11, 2026. Then episodes five and six will be available to stream on November 18, while the final two episodes of the season will be released on November 25.
