One of the most distinctive fantasy settings in gaming is getting its own English tabletop RPG. LionWing Publishing is bringing Gensou Narratograph: The Roleplaying Game Based on Touhou to English-speaking players, with the official release planned for 2027.

The game is set in Gensokyo, the hidden land at the heart of Touhou Project, where humans, yokai, gods and magicians live side by side. It was first published in Japanese by Kadokawa in 2023, and LionWing announced its English edition earlier this month.

A Fantasy World Built On Folklore

For readers who know Touhou only as a bullet-hell shooter series, Gensokyo might be a surprise. The setting draws heavily on Japanese folklore and mythology, filling its shrines, forests and mansions with yokai, spirits and magicians. It is a place sealed off from the outside world, and much of its charm comes from the strange daily lives of the people who live there.

Gensou Narratograph leans into that side of the franchise. LionWing says players take on the roles of familiar residents of Gensokyo and create their own stories in a world of "humans, yokai, and magic." Shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei and witch Marisa Kirisame are among the 30 characters in the rulebook.

How The Game Plays

The game supports one to four players and a Game Master, and it runs on a handful of six-sided dice. LionWing describes it as blending cozy slice-of-life storytelling with Danmaku Duels, a system inspired by the series' signature bullet-hell confrontations. In the source games, conflicts are often settled with dazzling spell card battles rather than fights to the death, so a ruleset that keeps the spectacle while making room for quieter character moments fits the world well.

The rulebook includes a newly drawn map of Gensokyo with 21 locales to visit, each with flavor text written by Touhou creator ZUN. There is also new character art, plus a 100-page replay featuring ZUN himself, which LionWing says presents an actual play session in manuscript form.

Replays are a long tradition in Japanese tabletop gaming. Rather than reading only rules and setting text, readers follow a real group through a full session, complete with dice rolls, banter and character choices. They often double as entertainment in their own right, and having the creator of the setting as one of the participants gives fans a rare look at how ZUN himself imagines stories in Gensokyo playing out.

Editions And Ordering

LionWing will release three editions. Two hardcovers will only be available during the ordering window, and one of those comes with painted edges. A softcover edition is planned for retail later. The BackerKit campaign launches on November 3, and LionWing says more details about the game and how to order will follow before then. Prices have not been revealed. Anyone interested can sign up on the BackerKit pre-launch page now to get a notification when the campaign goes live.

From Doujin Shooter To Tabletop Setting

ZUN, working under the name Team Shanghai Alice, released the first Touhou game, Touhou: Highly Responsive to Prayers, on the PC-98 in 1995. Over three decades, the series has built one of the deepest fan cultures in Japanese pop culture, with countless fan-made novels, comics, songs and games set in Gensokyo.

That history of fan storytelling is what makes a tabletop RPG such a natural fit. Touhou has always invited fans to imagine new adventures for its characters, and Gensou Narratograph gives English-speaking players an official framework to do exactly that. It joins a growing wave of video game worlds heading to the tabletop, from World of Warcraft's Dungeons And Dragons crossover to the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG.

Would you want to explore Gensokyo in a tabletop campaign, and which corner of the world would you visit first?
