Leicester Square in London hosted the world premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water earlier tonight, and with the social media embargo now lifted, critics have been Tweeting out their initial thoughts on James Cameron's sci-fi sequel.

Based on these first reactions, it sounds like The Way of Water is... pretty damn good! As expected, the visuals and action sequences have come in for a lot of praise, but the thin plot and characterization were singled out for criticism, as was the movie's mammoth 3 hour, 10 minute run-time.

To be fair, some do seem to have been blown away by the film, and there hasn't been any outright negative reactions (yet, anyway).

Check out the Tweets for yourselves below, and we'll continue to update as more come in.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.

Thin plot and characterization are what kills any movie that's around the 3+ hour mark. You need to actually be invested in the characters and their story to start feeling that long runtime, fancy special effects and cool CGI action can only get you so far.

I started watching the almost 4-hour long Lawrence of Arabia last night and I got so involved in Lawrence, his friends and their mission that it's been 3-hours and it went by in a flash (I had to pause it because got real late).
