Avatar: The Way of Water splashes down into theaters this December, but before we get to experience James Cameron's long-awaited sequel, Avatar returns to the big screen next month.

The Academy Award-winning 2009 epic adventure is the most successful movie of all time, and arrives in theaters on September 23 in stunning 4K High Dynamic Range. Now, 20th Century Studios has released a new trailer poster art to celebrate the re-release of the groundbreaking 3D blockbuster.

Watching this footage, it's clear to see that improvements have been made to Avatar's visuals, and it should be well worth experiencing on the big screen again. While the movie was responsible for ushering in an era of terrible 3D conversions as studios looked to cash in on the craze, Avatar made superb use of the format and, unless you have an old 3D TV, this is now the only way to experience it in that way.

In fact, it will be the only way to watch the movie, period. Disney made headlines earlier this week when Avatar was mysteriously pulled from Disney+. We're assuming that's because this 4K version will eventually be added to the streaming service but, right now, it looks a lot like the studio is doing what it can to ensure people go and watch the movie again in theaters.

Disney has yet to comment on that, though we'll be sure to keep you updated.

Written and directed by Cameron, Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver.

The film was produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and ended up being nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Ultimately, Avatar won three Oscars for Best Cinematography, Production Design, and Visual Effects.
