GODZILLA VS. KONG Sequel Is Likely To Be SON OF KONG...And Probably Won't Feature Godzilla

We have some surprising new details on the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel to share, and it appears we won't necessarily see the King of the Monsters, with the focus instead shifting to Kong's son. Check it out...

Godzilla vs. Kong vastly exceeded expectations at the box office in the midst of the pandemic last year, and while we haven't heard much since about Legendary Pictures' "MonsterVerse" plans, a sequel is officially in development. However, whether that will involve Godzilla remains to be seen, especially as Toho has its own plans to expand the franchise with its own Japanese-based productions.

Legendary is teaming up with Apple for a Monarch TV series set between the events of Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, though the belief is that it will focus on other kaiju.

MovieNews.net is reporting that this Godzilla vs. Kong sequel may in fact be Son of Kong, and not a movie that pits the two iconic monsters against each other. The site also speculates that Legendary may be gearing up to start shooting Monarch, so it could be best to temper expectations for now.

While it's a shame to think we might not see more of Godzilla in the MonsterVerse, further exploring Kong's story (or, in this instance, his son) is a compelling prospect. The hope is still that Adam Wingard will direct the project, though we can't say for sure whether he'll have time in the near future.

"Son of Kong" is Godzilla vs. Kong 2's working title, anyway, and we'd bet on this movie exploring his place in Hollow Earth. There are plenty of other kaiju that Kong's son can fight, of course, and it's hard to imagine where another clash between those beasts could go based on what we saw last year.

Stay tuned for the latest on Godzilla vs. Kong 2/Son of Kong!

I don’t get toho, these movies make money. A lot more than a Japanese movie ever could since they don’t have the world wide release like the legendary ones do.

Why back out now?

@campblood - King of the Monsters flopped and the 2014 Godzilla didn't exactly set the box office in fire either. Basically, only the movies starring Kong have been both financial and critical successes from the Monsterverse.

I hope son of Kong has a superpower. Kong seems like the only one without one. If I were to give him one it would be to generate an electric charge in his fur and electrocute a Kaiju he touches. When ever I pet my cat, I get a tiny electric shock and she is not a Kaiju.

A Son of Kong movie will need to spend a good chunk of time setting up more of Kong's species, it would be awkward if after his journey in GvK he just suddenly has a wife and kid out of nowhere.

If you're going to do Son of Kong, you better as hell introduce Godzuki, or it's a total wash.
