We recently learned that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney is set to take on the lead role in Sony Pictures' upcoming Barbarella reboot. The actress will also executive produce the movie, and all signs point to this being a passion project for her.
Sweeney all but confirmed as much during a recent interview in which she shared her hopes for the movie.
"Jane Fonda...she created such an incredible, iconic character," the actress started. "And I want to, hopefully, just fill those shoes and give more to a whole new generation - her outfits, sci-fi, the fun of the story. So, I'm looking forward to it."
Her outfits? Sweeney, widely considered one of the most beautiful stars working in Hollywood today, is a powerhouse talent. However, the second she was cast, many Barbarella fans wondered if she might don those iconic outfits and, as of right now, it's looking like that will indeed be the case.
The original Barbarella movie was released way back in 1968 and has become a cult classic in the years since. We don't expect this to be an "erotic" sci-fi movie, though we're guessing it will be similarly raunchy and tongue-in-cheek. However, with Sweeney also producing, we're hoping it will also be an empowering adventure for the heroine.
As of right now, this reboot is still in the very early stages of development, as no writer or director have been revealed by the studio (there's also no word on a release date). Sony is clearly high on the actress, though, as this news comes shortly after she landed a lead role in February 2024's Madame Web.
