Director James Cameron has been talking about his plans for sequels to 2009's sci-fi blockbuster, Avatar, for almost as long as the movie has been in theaters. Most of us never really thought they'd materialize, but we are now just 100 days away from the release of his first follow-up, The Way of Water.

The begin the countdown, the official 20th Century Studios Twitter account has shared a new promo image featuring a Na'vi warrior (possibly Sam Worthington's Jake Sully) riding one of the new creatures we'll meet in the movie.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Way of Water is set to hit theaters in December 16th, 2022.
