Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder has taken to Twitter to announce that production on his new sci-fi adventure is now underway, and he's also shared some new stills to mark the occasion.

In addition to a pair of behind-the-scenes images showing the interior and exterior of some kind of spacecraft, we have a first look at the character played by Guardians of the Galaxy and A Quiet Place Part II actor Djimon Hounsou.

We don't have any details on his role, but he joins and ensemble cast that also includes Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Charlie Hunnam, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Rupert Friend, Stuart Martin, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, and Sky Yang.

Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond, Atomic Blonde, The Mummy) will play the lead: "A young woman with a mysterious past who seeks out warriors from neighboring planets to help a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy take a stand against the tyrannical Regent Balisarius."

Snyder has often said that if he was given the opportunity to helm a Star Wars movie, he'd pay homage to the great Akira Kurosawa with an epic space adventure inspired by Seven Samurai, and it sounds like he'll get the chance to tell his story in a different galaxy far, far away. Snyder also co-wrote the project with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, and will produce alongside Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller for The Stone Quarry.

You can check out the full synopsis below.

“A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.”

I think for Zach Snyder, each new film is a litmus test of his past involvement with the DCEU. if he makes a bad movie it vindicates anti-Snyder fans and if it is a huge hit it supports Snyder advocates.
