KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC Video Game Writer Reveals Why He Doesn't Want To See A Movie Adaptation

Knights of the Old Republic writer Drew Karpyshyn has revealed that he's not interested in a movie adaptation because he doesn't believe it would be capable of doing the video game franchise justice...

The Star Wars franchise continues to expand, and while that's primarily been on Disney+ in recent years, we know Lucasfilm has big plans for this Galaxy Far, Far Away in theaters too.

There have been rumblings for a while that Knights of the Old Republic will be brought to the big screen in some form, whether it be as a straightforward adaptation of the video games or a fresh spin on its setting and characters. A remake of the game is in the works, of course, but could that be leading to a movie?

Writer Drew Karpyshyn, who also worked on Mass Effect, certainly hopes not.

Doing a Reddit AMA, he said, "I don't want them to make a [Knights of the Old Republic] film. Or a Mass Effect film. Not if those films are just going to tell the same story as the games. Branching narrative games tell stories in a different way than a linear medium like film, and we have so much content that you'd have to cut 80% of the story to fit it into a film."

"Maybe it could work as a series, but even then I think it would be problematic," Karpyshyn continued. "I tried one time to tell a game story in one of my novels (Throne of Bhaal), and I vowed I would never do it again - it never works well. But if they knock on my door and drop a fat sack of $$$ on my front step, I'll probably change my tune."

Ultimately, this is a decision that will be made by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. It's been nearly two decades since Knights of the Old Republic was released, and the franchise's popularity hasn't subsided in any way. The fact this era is so far removed from the movies gives the studio lots of new ground to explore without worrying too much about the stories we've seen.

Karpyshyn makes some good points, though, and it won't be easy to bring this corner of the Star Wars franchise to life in live-action. Still, it's about damn time we see Revan on screen!

What are your hopes for Knights of the Old Republic moving forward?
