OBI-WAN KENOBI Spoilers: Why THAT Costume Was So Familiar (And How It May Muddle Up Disney Canon)

Obi-Wan Kenobi's finale introduced a new costume for Ben Kenobi, but why did it look so familiar? There's a good reason for that, but it may contradict a story featuring the Jedi Master told by Marvel Comics.

At the end of today's Obi-Wan Kenobi finale, the Jedi Master returned to Tatooine and embarked on a new mission to learn how to live on after death courtesy of his fallen Master, Qui-Gon Jinn.

While he'll continue watching over Luke Skywalker, Ben has realised that the boy is safe with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru and is clearly more in touch with the Force now than ever before. With his new outlook came a new costume that we're sure will have rung a bell for many of you.

It actually originates from a statue released by Sideshow way back in 2012. That was the same year Disney acquired Lucasfilm, but it wasn't until a 2016 comic book that it was added to the current Star Wars canon. The issue, by Jason Aaron and Mike Mayhew, told the story of how Obi-Wan rescued a young Luke from Jabba the Hutt's thugs during the Great Drought.

However, there's a slight continuity problem here.

The story is set prior to the events of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but with Ben using the Force and Owen warning him to keep away from Luke, it arguably contradicts too much for us to later learn that the adventure actually took place after the TV show. It could be retconned, but doing so might further confuse matters.

Whether this shows that Marvel Comics' Star Wars stories aren't overly important in the grand scheme of things is hard to say, but even though Lucasfilm signs off on all these story decisions, no one can blame them for not being beholden to events that play out in comics only a small percentage of fans read. For purists, however, this might prove somewhat problematic.

Still, we're loving Ben's new look and hope this is a sign Disney+ plans to continue his adventures on Tatooine in an eventual Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2...

I didn't think about the continuity with the comic at all. However, I don't think it meddles with continuity. Isn't the story told as part of Kenobi's journal? Maybe he just wrote down years later and just got some thing confused

Maybe all the characters on the show just forgot.

It's just an outfit, & a nod to a cool statue. Most people in this shows probably aren't even aware there's Star Wars comics, let alone know what happens in them.
