Long before we got to watch Star Wars: The Force Awakens in theaters, there was one character who fans instantly gravitated towards: Captain Phasma. Quite easily the most unique-looking Stormtrooper we'd seen to date, the fact that Phasma was played by Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie only served to increase excitement.
Unfortunately, despite being an intimidating presence on screen, the villain was largely wasted. That was particularly the case in The Last Jedi when she met an abrupt and fiery end, and it feels like Lucasfilm failed to take advantage of a character who could have been every bit as formidable and terrifying as Kylo Ren.
The Star Wars trilogy was rife with missed opportunities, of course, but if we ever revisit that period, you have to believe more Captain Phasma is a possibility.
She's already appeared in the animated Star Wars Resistance and her own Marvel Comics series, so how would Christie feel about reprising the role? "I haven’t read the comics but, I mean, it’s Star Wars! I would absolutely love that," the Sandman star tells Empire Online. "There was a template for a character that people got really excited about."
That template did excite fans, and there was definitely a great deal of disappointment when the movies didn't quite deliver on it. Phasma is an intriguing character, and one who could make for a fun recurring presence throughout any number of future TV shows or movies.
After all, she was clearly key in assembling The First Order's Stormtroopers (who we knew were primarily children of the Empire's enemies), and those years before the events of The Force Awakens have plenty of storytelling potential.
For now, Christie is happy playing as Phasma in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga!
"This is the next step for me," she jokes, "because as a teenager I was quite obsessed with computer games, and I was quite good at them. I think it’s time to revisit them because they could be everything I had initially wanted them to be. There are entire worlds out there [where] we can investigate our megalomania!"
