STAR WARS: It Sounds Like We'll Be Waiting A VERY Long Time For The Franchise's Next Movie

Disney+ Day delivered zero surprises, and all eyes are now on D23 for big announcements and reveals. However, it doesn't sound like Lucasfilm will address the Star Wars franchise's future during the event...

While the Star Wars franchise continues going from strength to strength on Disney+, the future of the franchise in theaters remains uncertain. Solo: A Star Wars Story's underwhelming box office performance led to Lucasfilm scrapping future spinoffs, while the negative response to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also appeared to derail the studio's plans.

Rian Johnson's trilogy appears to be nowhere close to happening, while Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss shelved their trilogy plans after signing a lucrative deal with Netflix.

For a time, it looked like a Rogue Squadron movie from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was up next, but it's been all quiet on that front for a while now. We're not sure what's going on, though the prevailing theory is that creative differences may have come into play (if so, that's majorly embarrassing after that pricey announcement video).

Taika Waititi is believed to be working on a movie, of course, but if Thor: Love and Thunder was any indication, his approach to filmmaking may not gel with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy's very specific vision for the franchise.

In his latest Puck newsletter, former The Hollywood Reporter editor Matthew Belloni warned Star Wars fans not to expect any news about a new movie at this weekend's D23.

It's said that Kennedy isn't ready to give any of those rumoured big screen projects, including Damon Lindelof's, the green light at this point in time. As a result, we won't be heading to that Galaxy Far, Far Away in theaters until after 2024 at the soonest, and that means there will have been a huge gap between The Rise of Skywalker and whatever comes next.

It's hard to believe Disney is happy with that, but at least Star Wars continues to make a positive impact on the small screen.
