Gary Oldman has been part of many major franchises, including Harry Potter and The Dark Knight Trilogy. However, we've yet to see him head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away as part of a Star Wars movie or TV show, but the Oscar-winner very nearly played a key role in 2005's Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

Talking to Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor confirmed he was George Lucas' top choice to play General Grievous and even recorded the villain's lines under the legendary filmmaker's direction.

"I did a voice for Star Wars...was it General Grievous? What happened was something to do with union stuff and non-union stuff," Oldman recalled. "Lucas directed me through the whole thing. Yeah, he was terrific." We're not sure exactly what went wrong here, but talk about a missed opportunity.

John DiMaggio and Richard McGonagle voiced Grievous in Star Wars: Clone Wars, though Matthew Wood would take over for both Revenge of the Sith and The Clone Wars. He did a fantastic job and made the character his own, but we can't help but wonder what Oldman's interpretation would have sounded like (and whether it might have made the General a little more memorable).
