STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Director Rian Johnson Reveals Whether He Still Hopes To Direct Planned Trilogy

Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson has revealed whether he plans to still helm that trilogy for Lucasfilm, admitting it would "break my heart" if he doesn't get to return down the line.

It's been five years since Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrived in theaters and the movie remains one of the most divisive entries in the franchise. While there's no denying it was a great sci-fi blockbuster, many fans were understandably upset by the portrayal of Luke Skywalker and certain creative decisions like eliminating the mystery behind Rey's parents and Supreme Leader Snoke's identity.

That's more down to a lack of planning on Lucasfilm's part and the studio's baffling decision to let the filmmakers they hired take this story wherever the heck they wanted. As a result, it's hard to blame Johnson for trying new things with the Star Wars franchise, and Disney was happy enough with what he delivered to hire the filmmaker to write and direct a whole new trilogy.

With Johnson moving on to the Knives Out franchise and Lucasfilm going back to the drawing board with its Star Wars movies, the fate of this trilogy has remained a mystery. Until now.

"I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it," the filmmaker tells Empire Online. "It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point."

Earlier this year, Kennedy echoed these comments by pointing out how busy Johnson is and saying, "It’ll be a while. And we have to work three, five years in advance on what we’re doing. So that’s where that sits. But we love him."

Clearly, the door isn't completely closed on these mystery Star Wars movies becoming a reality, but there's currently no indication that they'll happen in the near future. It's a shame in many ways as we're intrigued to learn what Johnson has planned, but we could also understand Lucasfilm wanting the dust to settle after all that backlash aimed at The Last Jedi.

Are you still hoping to see this Star Wars trilogy become a reality?
