It's been confirmed today that Emmy and Tony-winning actor and comedian Neil Patrick Harris has joined the cast of Doctor Who. He worked with showrunner Russel T. Davies on It's a Sin, and this is arguably the biggest Hollywood star to ever join the cast of the long-running BBC series.

Harris is currently in the midst of shooting scenes that will air next year as part of Doctor Who's 60th anniversary.

"It’s my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris..but who, why, what is he playing?" Davies said in a statement today. "You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware!"

That sounds ominous, and it probably should based on further comments shared by the producer on Instagram. There, he was a less vague and said, "Neil Patrick Harris, welcome to Cardiff. Playing the greatest enemy the Doctor has ever faced. Such a great actor, such a great man, it’s an honor and a hoot. Have fun!"

Speculation is already running rampant about who Harris could be playing, but this is big news, and an exciting addition to the series. With Jodie Whittaker set to end her stint as the Doctor later this year, we're assuming the actor will be squaring off against Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa, the Fourteenth regeneration of this classic sci-fi character.
