Takashi Yamazaki is about to unleash a new monster on theaters with Godzilla Minus Zero, but the director is already lining up his next big swing. Sam Nivola and Nico Parker are set to star in Grandgear, Yamazaki's first major studio film, and Paul Giamatti is in talks to join them.

Grandgear is an original science fiction movie from Sony Pictures. Yamazaki is directing from a screenplay he wrote himself, and J.J. Abrams is producing through Bad Robot alongside Glen Zipper.

A Thorough Search For The Leads

The hunt for the movie's two most prominent roles was a careful one. The process included a round of chemistry tests, which is what landed Nivola and Parker the parts. Giamatti, meanwhile, was said to be highly sought after for his role.

No character details have been shared yet, and the plot is being kept under wraps. Production is expected to start in 2027, and Sony currently has the film dated for January 14, 2028.

Giant Mechs From A VFX Master

While the story is still secret, there are already some hints about what kind of movie this is. Sony showed early footage of Grandgear at CinemaCon earlier this year, and the clip featured giant mechs fighting each other. That has led to plenty of comparisons to Pacific Rim, and it would be a natural evolution for a filmmaker who has spent his career pushing what large-scale effects can do on a smaller budget.

Yamazaki is one of Japan's leading directors and also a veteran visual effects supervisor. He wrote, directed and led the effects team on Godzilla Minus One, which became a global hit and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. That win made him the first director since Stanley Kubrick to take home the Oscar for visual effects.

Giving that kind of talent a Hollywood budget and a sci-fi concept built around colossal machines is an exciting idea. Godzilla Minus One worked because it never lost sight of the people on the ground, and early descriptions of Grandgear suggest Yamazaki is bringing that same grounded perspective to mech combat.

Meet The Cast

Nivola earned acclaim for his role as Lochlan Ratliff in the latest season of The White Lotus and was part of the cast nominated for ensemble honors at the Actor Awards. He is also set to appear in Hulu's Phony opposite Connie Britton, and his film credits include White Noise and Maestro.

Parker won the Breakthrough Performance Award at Sundance for Suncoast and earned a BAFTA nomination for playing Sarah in HBO's The Last of Us. She also played Astrid in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, so she already has experience working opposite effects-driven spectacle.

Giamatti is one of the most respected character actors working today, with films like Sideways and The Holdovers on his resume. He also has genre credentials, most recently as the villain in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and he can be seen next in the A24 dramedy The Debut.

Godzilla Comes First

Before any of this, Yamazaki has Godzilla Minus Zero to deliver. The sequel premiered at the New York Film Festival and pits Godzilla against King Ghidorah. In the US, it opens in IMAX on November 3 before expanding to theaters everywhere on November 6.

If Minus Zero lands the way Minus One did, expectations for Grandgear are only going to climb. Fans of grounded kaiju storytelling can also revisit the MonsterVerse with our review of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters while they wait.
