Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is in the very early stages of development on an I Am Legend sequel, with 4x Academy Award-nominee Will Smith (King Richard; Bad Boys for Life; Suicide Squad) set to return and serve as a producer.
Primetime Emmy-nominee Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther; Creed; Without Remorse) will co-star and will also be a producer on a project, his first time working with Smith in both capacities.
No director is currently attached, but in addition to Smith, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind; Cinderella Man; i, Robot) is also returning to pen the new script.
Plot details are being kept under lock-and-key in the darkest corners on the Warner Bros. lot, but the development of this project and Smith's involvment are surely an unexpected surprise as, if you remember, his character Dr. Robert Neville sacrificed himself at the end of the theatrical cut of the original film. Whether he'll appear as a resurrected Darkseeker or be found alive somehow, that remains to be seen, but it'll certainly make for an interesting reveal if/when this movie arrives in theaters.
His character does survive in the film's alternate ending, but it's unlikely - not impossible - they'll pick up the story after an alternate cut.
Smith has since confirmed the news and shared the following image:
