Apple TV+ has revealed that Foundation will be returning for a third season on the streaming app. The sci-fi adaptation of Isaac Asimov's novel stars Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, and Leah Harvey.
“I’m thrilled Apple has given us the opportunity to continue chronicling Asimov’s pioneering galactic saga. This time, the stakes for Foundation and Empire are even higher as the Mule takes center stage, along with fan-favorites Bayta, Toran, Ebling and Magnifico Giganticus,” said showrunner and executive producer David S. Goyer via press release.
Season 2 of Foundation received mixed reviews, with some critics appreciating its ambition and scope and others criticizing its pacing and deviations from the source material.
The show's visual effects have received widespread accolades, with many critics claiming that they are among the greatest on television. The acting is also largely lauded, with many critics praising Jared Harris and Lee Pace's performances in particular.
However, the sluggish pace of the show is a major source of dispute, with some viewers thinking it excessively slow and others finding it downright boring. However, that might be a factor of the source material as the Foundation saga is a sci-fi saga that relies on human intrigue and political machinations instead of large-scale action sequences.
Still, the show has a devoted fan base that's sure to be pleased by the news of its renewal following the airing of the season 2 finale on September 15, 2023.
“We have all been incredibly impressed with the ambitious, action-packed and imaginative adaptation that David and the rest of this gifted creative team and cast have brought to life with this premium sci-fi series from day one,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+.
“To watch ‘Foundation' become such a global hit has been beyond exciting with audiences around the world continuing to be captivated week after week by this dramatic and compelling journey to save humanity. We can’t wait for everyone to experience what is in store for characters old and new in season three.”
