There's a good reason people say "never bet against James Cameron," but could anyone have predicted just how successful his Avatar sequel would turn out to be?
The Way of Water has gone from being perceived as the "sequel no one wanted" to the third highest-grossing film of all time after passing Titanic's global gross.
Now, it'll need to catch Marvel Studios' mighty Avengers: Endgame and the original Avatar to take the #1 spot. Is it doable? Short of a re-release, we'd say it's unlikely, but who knows - the movie is showing no signs of slowing down even after almost two months on general release.
Titanic was recently re-released, so we may see some back-and-forth as the movies overtake each other at the box office, but analysts believe The Way of Water will ultimately come out on top.
With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
