"Whatever you do, don't open your eyes."
Despite mixed reviews, 2018's sci-fi horror, Bird Box, was a massive hit for Netflix, and the streamer recently announced that the first of several planned spin-off films, Bird Box Barcelona, is set to premiere on July 14.
The original film starred Sandra Bullock as a mother who makes a desperate attempt to get her two children to safety when an ominous, unseen presence drives most of society to suicide. This Spanish-language spin-off was helmed by The Occupant and The Head filmmakers Alex and David Pastor, and will follow a similar premise.
Following a brief teaser, a full trailer has now been released, and it reveals that this won't actually be a prequel, but will take place at the same time as the first film in a different part of the world.
“The events that we see Malorie/Sandra Bullock endure in the original Bird Box are happening at the same time that Sebastian/Mario Casas is going through his journey. Being in Barcelona gave us a chance to see how surviving this intense threat in an iconic city poses different challenges," producer Dylan Clark tells EW.
Check out the new teaser below.
“After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population by causing all who see it to take their lives, Sebastian and his young daughter Anna must navigate their own journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. But as they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than the unseen creatures grows.”
Bird Box Barcelona stars Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Celia Freijeiro with Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner and Leonardo Sbaraglia.
