During their NYCC panel last night, Amazon MGM Studios and Alcon Television Group debuted the official teaser trailer for Blade Runner 2099, offering a stunning new look at their highly anticipated eight-episode limited series, which is headlined by Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer.
While plot details are being kept most under wraps, the series synopsis reads, "Fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity. Cora, a fugitive in a final bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen, a Replicant days from dying, she hunts down a runaway hiding a truth that could collapse a fragile city."
Yeoh plays Olwen, while Schafer portrays Cora. Teasing the show's underlying mystery, showrunner Silka Luisa teases Olwen is “supposed to be looking for human insurgents, humans that continue to fight back. But… she’s actually here looking for a Blade Runner who’s gone missing, Merrick, one of her colleagues, and that’s the first time that happened.”
She adds, “We are 50 years after 2049, and bad news. The worst has happened. The replicant uprising that has been bubbling up in the films has taken place, and humans have lost. 2099 is taking place at a junction point when one species is ending and a new one is rising. The first film, something I loved about it was that it was looking at mortality on a micro level. Roy Batty and the other replicants were fighting for more life. This show asked that same question, but on a macro level. Mankind, what happens when we realize our time is running out? Are we going to accept that loss? Can we hold on to our humanity during it?”
The main cast features Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria, Cuckoo), Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Love Addicts), and Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy, Get Duked!).
Recurring guest stars include Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II, The Princess), Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell, Black Mirror), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow, Jawbone), Amy Lennox (Only Child, Holby City), Sheila Atim (The Woman King, The Underground Railroad), Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon, Napoleon), Tom Burke (Furiosa, Strike), and Maurizio Lombardi (Ripley, The Young Pope).
Silka Luisa serves as showrunner, creator and executive producer. Ridley Scott, Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon’s President of Television Ben Roberts, Steven Johnson, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions, Richard Sharkey, Tom Spezialy, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Tim Gable, and Isa Dick Hackett serve as executive producers. Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun) is an executive producer and directed the first two episodes of the upcoming limited series.
Blade Runner 2099 premieres, with all eight episodes, on November 25, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
