Netflix is currently celebrating its annual "Geeked Week," and we now have the first poster for Code 8 Part II. With that comes confirmation the sequel will be released on the streaming platform in 2024 (unfortunately, that's as specific a release date as we have right now).
Code 8 largely flew under the radar when it was released in 2019, but it received a positive response from critics and sci-fi fans alike. However, when the movie made the jump to Netflix, it quickly became a surprise hit on the streamer, prompting them to move forward with a follow-up.
We also have a synopsis which reads, "In this sequel to Code 8, Connor (Robbie Amell) is out of prison and working as a janitor at a community center, having cut ties with his former criminal associate Garrett (Stephen Amell)."
"Connor’s attempt at staying out of trouble is destroyed when he’s forced to help 14-year-old Pav (Sirena Gulamgaus) escape from a pack of corrupt officers led by Sergeant King (Alex Mallari Jr.). King uses the newly launched robotic K9's to track Pav down, while Connor finds himself once again reaching out to Garrett and his crew for help, but can he trust the man who landed him in prison in the first place?"
Jeff Chan returns as the movie's director, while he penned the script alongside Jesse LaVercombe, Sherren Lee, and Chris Pare. As for the cast, it's led by Robbie Amell, Stephen Amell, Sirena Gulamgaus, Alex Mallari Jr., Jean Yoon, and Aaron Abrams.
Robbie and Stephen, who previously shared the screen in the Arrowverse and are cousins, also executive produce.
Talking to us when the first movie was released in 2019, Chan explained why he approached Code 8 as a standalone feature but, at the same time, left the door open to taking a deeper dive into this world with a potential sequel.
"I think for us, we wanted to make sure we were telling a story that was self-contained. The story of this movie is how far someone would go to save somebody they love. In the case of Connor, it's a love story about family and what you'd do to save the most important person in your life."
"The movie told that story and that's where we wanted to end things without trying too obviously to set up a sequel or any sort of a future because people have seen a lot of that and it comes off sometimes as disingenuous and we certainly didn't want to do that."
"We preferred to focus on a story that was self-contained and obviously, looking at where the characters and story end up, there's room to take things further down the line and if we get that opportunity, it's something we would be excited to do. For this movie, we wanted to make a standalone feature."
