Edge of Tomorrow fans have been longing for a sequel ever since the film was released back in 2014, but updates on the project over the last few years have not been very optimistic.

Back in 2019, it was reported that a sequel from director Doug Liman was finally greenlit at Warner Bros. and that filming would commence once Matthew Robinson finished writing the script.

While promoting Oppenheimer on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Emily Blunt shared that the script is finished. However, the major problem now is that Tom Cruise is too busy pumping out Mission Impossible sequels.

"No, because I wish there could be one. Have I ever read a script? Yes, we did. There was one that Doug [Liman] kind of slithered over to me. I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when or how. And how many Mission: Impossibles does [Tom Cruise] need? Come on. Come back to the side where you can be a…wasn’t he brilliant as the cowardly hero? Incredible. I’m so ready. I’m not the impediment, I promise."

Liman has previously stated that he wants to title the sequel, Live. Die. Repeat and Repeat, but it's hard to imagine studio executives signing off on that hard-to-market title.

The studio somewhat struggled with how to market the film during its initial theater run and seemingly changed the title of the film from Edge of Tomorrow to Live. Die. Repeat for its home video release.

While the sci-fi epic was not a major hit at the box office, its home video and rental sales were reportedly high enough to push WB to move forward with a sequel.

The first Edge of Tomorrow film is based on the Japanese manga All You Need Is Kill, from Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi ABe.

About Edge of Tomorrow: The epic action of this sci-fi thriller unfolds in a near-future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.
