Amazon-owned MGM is banking on the star power of Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal to attract cinephiles to theaters when Foe hits cinemas on October 6.
It certainly looks as if that will be the case as the majority of comments on the trailer are gushing over the pairing of the two up-and-coming Hollywood stars.
Foe is based on a 2018 novel of the same name by Ian Reid, who also co-wrote the screenplay with director Garth Davis (Lion, Mary Magdalene).
Set in the year 2065, Mescal (Aftersun) plays a farmer named Junior, who has been selected to go live on a space station and help develop its farming protocols as the Earth's populace prepares to depart the deteriorating planet and live exclusively among the stars.
While Junior is set to live on the space station for several years, Hen, played by Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Atonement), must stay behind.
To make Junior more likely to accept the offer, Terrance, a representative from the organization building the space station (played by Aaron Pierre) offers to leave behind a robot duplicate of Junior to keep Hen company while he's away.
And in order to make the robot duplicate of Junior accurate, Terrance tells Junior and Hen that he must learn the most intimate details about their marriage. As Terrance probes into the inner workings of their marriage, the blissful life of Hen and Junior starts to unravel and leads to a shocking discovery.
Ahead of its October 6 theatrical release, Foe will make its worldwide debut at the New York Film Festival which kicks off on September 29.
LaKeith Stanfield was originally cast in the role now occupied by Pierre before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts. Stanfield recently starred in Disney's Haunted Mansion.
