FURIOSA Star Chris Hemsworth On Why He Was Scared To Join MAD MAX Spin-Off; Confirms Who He's Playing

Chris Hemsworth continues to add an impressive list of projects to his résumé, with George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, also on the horizon for him. While we've seen the actor on set, his role in the project is shrouded in secrecy, but the Thor star has finally shed some light on what to expect from the highly anticipated spin-off.

"Often I get a script and I know from the first read, the second read, I know who the character is and I get an instant, sort of, visceral feeling attached to it, like, 'Alright, I've got it,'" Hemsworth told Happy Sad Confused. "This I had read two years before I started shooting and was in awe of the script. It was the most beautiful thing I've read."

"I love George Miller - but I didn't know who this character was," he admits. "We did about four weeks of rehearsals, and we started digging in and diving into it, and things started coming to me. And then, about two weeks prior to shooting, something clicked."

"I went, 'Ooh! I think that's who it is. I think that's how he moves.' But, in the buildup, and I'm talking a couple years, I was scared out of my mind. I'm like, 'I'm gonna derail one of the most iconic franchises.' I'm gonna bring down Mad Max. It's gonna be my fault."

We're just under two years away from Furiosa being released, so Hemsworth wasn't willing to give too much away. However, he seemingly confirmed reports that he's been cast as the villainous Warlord Dementus when he jokingly said, "He's a pleasant fellow."

Despite those initial reservations, the Australian actor would later go on to say that Furiosa has been "the best experience of my career" and the project "I'm most proud of." Hemsworth would add, "I put more work into it than anything I've ever done. The collaboration I had with George was just beautiful, and working with Anya [Taylor-Joy] was incredible."

Funnily enough, the Furiosa star would later admit that he tried to land the title role in Mad Max: Fury Road, only to learn that Tom Hardy had beaten him to it. It's funny to see how things come back around, though the Warlord Dementus is a far cry from Max Rockatansky!

Furiosa is set to be released in theaters on May 24, 2024.
