Godzilla was seemingly destroyed at the end of Godzilla Minus One, but he's returning to menace Tokyo and possibly New York City in the highly anticipated sequel Godzilla Minus Zero, which hits theaters this fall.
Ahead of the film's official November 6, 2026 release, it will actually premiere early, on September 26, 2026, at this year's New York Film Festival.
In a new interview promoting the highly anticipated sequel, director Takashi Yamazaki is teasing how a reformed Godzilla will differ from the version seen in the first film.
In terms of how Godzilla will look, Yamazaki stated, "...I would say it’s certainly a lot pointier, spikier, and edgier than its predecessor and its representative of the added terror that Godzilla represents in Godzilla Minus Zero."
On whether this new version is bigger and more powerful, he commented, "...it’s quite close to or similar to the Godzilla we saw in Godzilla Minus One. I intentionally did not change that too much. I suppose you could say if there’s one area it improved, it was its ability to focus in and control its heat much better than before. But using a heat ray still hurts itself, so there’s not a huge evolution. I would say it’s quite similar in spec to Godzilla Minus One."
Yamazaki clarified that the sequel shifts the horror inward. Instead of giving Godzilla a massive size boost or shiny new superpowers, the film plays on pure psychological dread.
The director explained, "...in Godzilla Minus One we see Godzilla scattered at the end of the film. Over the past two years it was somehow able to regenerate from the cells that remained. The idea here is that nightmare has returned. It’s not bigger. It’s not more powerful. It’s the terror of facing something you thought you’ve defeated once that has somehow come back and landed in your shores."
Godzilla Minus One was a sleeper hit in 2023, grossing $115 million from an extremely modest budget of only $15 million. The film also took home an Academy Award for best visual effects, a first in the franchise's storied history.
Minus One ended its North American theatrical run as the 3rd highest-grossing foreign-language film of all-time after Life is Beautiful and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.'
The sequel will be distributed by GKids, with its president David Jesteadt commenting via press release, "GKIDS is proud to bring Godzilla Minus Zero to North American audiences, following the incredible global reception of Godzilla Minus One. This next chapter is sure to become another defining moment for the most colossal monster ever to dominate the screen.
