As excitement builds for Godzilla Minus Zero, it's been confirmed that the Kaiju's long-running franchise is set to make history with its first-ever R-rating. The Motion Picture Association has rated the Godzilla Minus One follow-up R for "some violent content/bloody images."
Over the past seven decades, Godzilla has laid waste to countless cities, monsters, and innocent humans. However, it seems there's something particularly brutal about filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki's latest entry.
Godzilla Minus Zero's predecessor was rated PG-13 by the MPA, despite being an admittedly very dark movie. We know that this follow-up will pit Godzilla against King Ghidorah, which likely means the human casualties will be higher than they have been in quite some time.
For Godzilla fans looking for a less bloody alternative, next year sees the release of Legendary's Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, which we know will be a PG-13 MonsterVerse movie, just like all previous chapters in that less critically acclaimed franchise.
"War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus," reads Godzilla Minus Zero's synopsis. "Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here."
Shot entirely in Japan as the first-ever Japanese production filmed for IMAX, Godzilla Minus Zero was shot with high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, and optimised in sound and imagery unique to IMAX screens. The globally beloved monster returns to movie theater screens, reaching greater and more terrifying heights, making Godzilla Minus Zero a true cinematic event not to be missed.
Godzilla Minus One was widely hailed as one of the best movies featuring its titular monster. With overwhelmingly positive reviews (it has 99% on Rotten Tomatoes) and an impressive $116 million at the worldwide box office on a reported $10 million to $15 million budget, Toho wasted no time when it came to greenlighting a sequel.
At the 2023 Academy Awards, Godzilla Minus One became the first-ever non-English-language movie to win an Oscar for "Best Visual Effects." In doing so, it bested big-budget Hollywood blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Creator, and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning.
Godzilla Minus Zero arrives in theaters on November 6, three days after its Japanese debut.
