Over the weekend, leaked merchandise revealed a first look at Godzilla Minus Zero's King Ghidorah, and we're now heading to the MonsterVerse for a sneak peek at Godzilla x Kong: Supernova's SpaceGodzilla.
It's clearly a prototype or unfinished toy, but it's detailed enough to give us an idea of how formidable the iconic monster will be in the upcoming sequel. Those spikes are terrifying, and Godzilla and King Kong may well have met their match in this behemoth.
SpaceGodzilla was the main antagonist in the 1994 Toho film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. A mutated clone of Godzilla, the Kaiju formed when Godzilla's cells—carried into space by either Mothra or remnants from Biollante—were sucked into a black hole, fused with crystalline extraterrestrial organisms, and emerged mutated.
SpaceGodzilla typically resembles Godzilla but features large crystalline spikes on its shoulders and back (replacing dorsal fins), a reddish-purple abdominal area, tusks, and a high-pitched roar. Many of those iconic features can be found on this action figure.
Word from test screenings is that neither Mothra nor Rodan are set to appear in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Surprisingly, there will also be no rematch for the movie's titular Kaiju frenemies. Tonally, it sounds like we can expect the MonsterVerse to get a little more serious again.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has proven that the franchise can still take itself seriously, and it will be interesting to learn how this blockbuster balances that more serious tone with the epic action fans are hoping for. For many Kaiju lovers, Godzilla Minus One is a very tough act to follow, and the same will likely be said of Godzilla Minus Zero after it opens later this month.
At the China Licensing Expo this past April, an early plot synopsis for the movie revealed, "As the sixth instalment in the 'MonsterVerse' film series, this movie will delve deeper into the delicate relationship of coexistence and trust between humans and prehistoric behemoths."
"Meanwhile, the earth-shaking monster storm triggered by the epic clash between Godzilla and Kong," it continued, "the two guardians of Earth’s ecological balance, will once again sweep across the big screen!"
Grant Sputore (I Am Mother) directs Godzilla x Kong: Supernova from a script by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callaham. The cast includes Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, and Dan Stevens, who reprises his role as veterinarian Trapper Beasley from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova arrives in theaters on March 26, 2027.
