With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire playing in theaters, we can finally get into spoilers!

In the movie, we're introduced to the Skar King, a Kong-like Titan who was trapped in the Hollow Earth by Godzilla years earlier. He's determined to return to the surface world and is controlling Shimo, a creature he plans to use to induce a new Ice Age.

Thanks to Mothra's intervention, Godzilla and Kong put their past differences aside to battle Skar King, though most of Rio de Janeiro is destroyed in the process.

The crystal Skar King uses to control Shimo is destroyed - even Baby Kong lends a helping hand - and she then helps the heroic Titans take down the villain. Frozen solid by Shimo, Skar King is later obliterated by Kong who shatters his remains and puts an end to him once and for all.

As Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ends, Godzilla and Kong go their separate ways but remain frenemies rather than true allies. Kong returns to the Hollow Earth with Shimo and Baby Kong, while Godzilla heads back to Rome where he resumes his nap in the Colosseum in Rome.

The movie's humans all make it out alive and the only noteworthy death is Skar King.

This story is surprisingly standalone in nature and there's nothing that really sets the stage for the MonsterVerse's future. However, while Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire doesn't boast a mid or post-credits scene, Mothra's roar can be heard at the very end of the credits, a hint perhaps that the Queen of the Monsters will get a bigger role next time.
