Prey was met with widespread acclaim when it launched on Hulu last July, and star Amber Midthunder has since confirmed that sequel talks are underway. The actress played Naru in the latest Predator reboot, with her Comanche warrior encountering the deadly aliens in that 1700s setting, leading to a vastly different, very exciting, take on a franchise which had grown stale.
The end credits pointed to Naru's tribe going to war with an entire army of invading Predators, so it's possible we'll follow that story or even jump ahead a few years to witness the fallout of whatever came next.
When the 2023 Emmy nominations were announced, Prey received a lot of love, with a total of six nominations including "Outstanding Directing" and "Outstanding Writing" (somehow it missed out on the "Outstanding Television Movie" category).
The Playlist recently caught up with filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg and, among the topics covered in their conversation, was just how far along that sequel is.
"I can’t really say anything about that right now, but I’ll say while we were finishing the movie, we were having really exciting conversations," he teases. "The studio, myself, the writer, and the producers about what crazy things could we do next."
"And I’ve never stopped, no one stopped thinking about how cool things could be going forward."
Asked if there's a chance Prey 2 would be a theatrical release (it would be somewhat baffling to relegate it to streaming), Trachtenberg played coy. "No comment," he stated. "I answered the question. Somewhat answered part of the question. Got to allow me that. [Laughs]"
Since Prey's release on Hulu last summer, fans have made it clear they want a follow-up. It also remains the best-reviewed Predator movie according to Rotten Tomatoes, and we're pretty sure official sequel news is on the way, even if Trachtenberg isn't willing to confirm it just yet.
